My brother owns a small apartment complex. If he hires a security company, can the company be sued for damages?

My brother owns a small apartment complex in California. If he hires a security company, can the company be sued for damages done to the complex? For example: If 10 windows were smashed in and a security officer did not make a proper patrol of the area, Can the security company be held liable? Any information would be much appreciated
