Does a police report trump what the insurance will be liable for?

I was injured in a car accident and the police report says it was the other drivers fault. I spoke to the insurance company and they said it is half my fault. My friend said that i should have never spoke to the insurance i should have gotten a lawyer. I thought it was a cut and dry issue since the accident report says the other driver is totally at fault. Have i ruined my case? i was knocked unconscience and do not remember the whole accident. My lawyer friend whom i told about the case TOLD me to call. What do i do?
