After 2 years of employment my employer just informed me that they had neglected to withold my health benefit?

I live in New York and after 2 years of employment my employer just informed me that they had neglected to withold my health benefit premiums and that I now owe $2,000. During the 2 year period I have not made any claims, am I liable for the $2,000?
