Can the cops be held liable if you crash while being chased for speeding?

The issue with high speed chases more commonly involves innocent bystanders, not the object of the chase. In order to prevail, the estate would have to prove that the cops were negligent and the negligence was the cause of the death. Certainly the suspect was negligent by criminally fleeing from the cops but it is theoretically possible that some cop could also be negligent. If the suspect had tried to stop and then a cop rammed him, that would be negligent and would be cause of the death. Merely chasing, however, is not usually neligent. Your beliefs about how cops should do their duty does not govern the issue or help in defining negligence in any way.
